I love Plex.
It’s insane how easy it is to manage my video content. Just drop stuff in the right folder and it figures eveyting out like magic.
I love the idea of adding podcasts into the mix. Their syncing is second to none and they’ve got apps on every platform (I know podcasts aren’t on all them YET). It’ll be nice if I can switch my poscasts consumption to plex. For one, the sync for the rest of my meda will stay more up to date as I’ll be lanunching the app on my phone while on my home network more oftern. Also, having access to my podcasts on evey device will be so nice.
So whats stopping me?
I need playlists. More specifically, some sort of smart playlist. Right now I can get a list of unplayed episodes, but not easily. I’d like to be able to set up a few lists, each with their own list of shows unplayed episodes to include.
Offline playback on iOS. I’m on a shared mobile account and we often go over our grandfathered in bandwith allowance. I can’t change that but adding streaming podcasts to the monthy isn’t going to fly.
Also, the podast secton is slow. Loading the page takes a few seconds which is annoying.
I would like a way to force the update of a show manually. At the moment there is no way to tell when it was updated and when comparing to Overcast it sometimes takes a long time for new episodes of certain shows to appear.
I can’t say for sure that I’ll ever swith to Plex for podcasts toally, but one can dream. I can expect that given the news about podcast support on the Apple Watch they’d never have a Watch app that supports it. It’s just too narrow a use case for what Plex is trying to do, and I understand that.
I’m sure more things will come up if or when I start to use it more. For now that’s all I can think of.
Update: CarPlay! I don’t have CarPlay in my vehicle yet, I do get to use it in Cheri’s car. Music/Podcast support via CarPlay would be a huge add.
